london impressions

we´ve been to london this weekend for the unbroken reunion show. first of all i have to say that this show was a huge highlight in all the shows i´ve been to in the last years and that were quiet a few. it definitely was worth the money we had to spend to get there. We had a great time although it wasnt long.

Our friend Rachel had these ones at home. Trackcycling is way bigger in the UK than in Germany.
So as you see Sir Chris Hoy recommends Bran Flakes for breakfast:)

This is just a random conversion fixed-gear we saw in Brighton. I don´t know why we photographed this one cause in London were so many other really awesome bikes to see.

We saw this pretty sick drivetrain in Brighton. A rack and pinion drive on a bike. As you can see there is no chain! Never seen that before i wonder how it rides.

As you may know London offers several fixed-gear shops and we took the chance to visit them.
First of all we went to Brick Lane Bikes located in the East End of London (as you can imagine in the Brick Lane...). In retrospect i think that would be my bikeshop of choice. They had an awesome huge stock of parts, frames and bikes and quite many used parts and bikes in their courtyard. All the prices where really fair and the employees were nice and not pushy - which unfortunately isn´t very likely in such shops.

Next we went to the 14 bike co. that wasnt really far away from the BLB shop. I have to say that shop is simply awesome. You can almost feel the enthusiasm for bikes of the guys working their. Everything in there is just clean, stylish and elegant - the most fancy bikeshop i´ve ever been into. They put all the parts they are selling in little furbished show cases so the chains, chainrings, sprockets and the other stuff looks like jewelry in a expensive jeweler. Although we couldnt afford to buy something they gave us free stickers. Great!

The last shop we visited was the maybe best known of them, the Tokyo Fixed Gear . I don´t really know what to say about this shop. The shop itself was pretty nice. Upstairs was some bike apparel and (what is kinda cool) you are able to take your own fixed-gear inside where are several bicycle stands. Downstairs were parts, frames and a little workshop. The assortment and prices were ok but i have to say the guys working there were just dickheads. I had the feeling every step i take in this shop was watched, every word we spoke was kinda judged with views of the employees. Maybe we were not cool, hip, known enough or worth in their eyes for being treated better. Up to today i don´t know what their problem was... I´ll never buy there something again.

So what is to say about London? I´ve never been to London before and afterwards i have to admit that it´s simply one of the coolest cities i´ve been to so far. I never, i really never saw that much fixed-gear bikes in a city before. Its highly possible that London is the unofficial "fixed-gear capitol" of europe. I HAVE to go there again - with my bike.

being a dickhead´s cool

probably the best i´ve seen on youtube for a long time. what a hit...

thx to rachael

a breakdown service for bikes

berlin has a breakdown service for bikes called "RadAmbulanz". it´s the first time is heard about something like that. although i prefer repairing my bikes by myself in a city as big as berlin this might be helpful if you get stuck far away from your home without any tools.

seen at: ? can´t remember...

"MOMOIRO track pro"

LOOK 464 AL P

yes we´re still alive

due to several reasons we haven´t blogged for a while but it´s time to move on (and not only because i´m pretty bored currently).

let´s start with some shots i took in paris with my cellphone:

so we´ve been to the cyclope fixed-gear shop in paris. actually we were pretty disappointed of it. there wasnt much to see except some guy bulding up a bike, some fixed-gears (mostly trick oriented stuff but a few nice custom-made bikes), some parts and some old expensive (i think mostly french) trackframes. around 400-600 euros for rusty trackframes with fucked up paintjobs (and in some cases with bent dropouts) are just ridiculous. ok a few of them were pretty nice and i remember a nice lo pro but even that one was obviously pretty often used and pricy as hell. don´t get me wrong: it´s a nice shop and i´m sure the guys there are savvy in what they are doing but somehow we expected something else.

by far the most fucked up pedals i´ve ever seen in my life. i wonder how to ride that? must be slippery as hell? pretty punk!

fixie inc. backspin. pretty stock. pretty lame somehow.

time for a new tire man! seen at the sorbonne university.

i´ve no idea what that is. seen at the toyota showroom on the champs-élysées. wheels remind me of rev-x´s.

spotted on the streets

seen last sunday in leipzig connewitz. i like the frame but i think it better would have been build up for what it´s made for: as a nice roadbike .

2011 Charge Models

charge bikes got a few new models/colors in their 2011 product range.

charge plug - 2 new colors (i dig the pink)

plug racer silver

plug freestyler in pink

new girl model "hob" - so great

cellphone shots

i made this shot at the "autostadt" in wolfsburg last week. they nearly sell everything labeled with volkswagen including this road bike with this pretty weird bar angle. it costs about 1100 - pretty much for a cheap shimano tiagra group and a cheap aluminium frame... and off course ugly as fuck...

i really can´t remember where i shot this. i think i was drunk....

shot of the day

"cycling against oil motivated wars"
seen today at the shop window of "fahrrad biela" - a small and nice bike shop in leipzig. leipzig has got plenty of bicycle shops - most of them are either equipped with asshole employees, a bad assortment or they have expensive prices. biela doesnt have specific fixed gear parts or a huge assortment of trendy bikestuff or whatever. it´s just a small shop with fair prices and nice employees for bigger repairs i can´t manage by myself. so if you have serious issues with your bike in leipzig check them out (Fichtestraße 16).

fixed-gear fashion show

mhhh I like the brand pedal.ed - seems like they have their own fashion show in Japan... never seen anything like that before!

final trailer: to live & ride in LA

I´m not sure we here in Germany will ever get the chance to see this movie but here´s the last and official trailer.

fixed gear feature on broadcasting

On German broadcasting (channel "Deutschlandradio Kultur") has been a feature on fixed-gear (04.07.2010). In case you missed it like me you can read the manuscript - so the write up to that feature, its quite a bit long but worth the reading - sad wise I didn´t found a audio file of this!

The journalist interviews police, (ex)couriers, bikeshop owners, polo players an give a short summary on bycicle history and of course the position of the law.
dowload here
you can get it as text format or as pdf file from the channel which broadcasted it.

takhion ebay frame buildup

look at our posting from 18th of june. it seems someone has build the frame up. i`m not sure if risers belong on such pursuit frames i think i´d put some bullhorns or drops on it. but nevertheless - nice bike.

Favorit - Czechoslovakian Track Bike

Found this jewel on Velospace. Since today I knew the brand Favorit only because nearly all eastgerman Diamant Cycles (former GDR) were equipped with Favorit derailleurs. Another remarkable fact: Favorit seemed to have their seat in Rokycany CZ, where we have been several times for the FLUFF Fest. I think I gotta watch out for czech Trackbikes next time I´m there :)

Queen - Bicycle Race

plenty of naked girls on road bikes... i´ve never seen that video before - weird but that song is definitely a hit!

Affinity Lo Pro

so if that isnt a clean build i dont know what. never saw this concor "sprint" version before maybe these are perfect for lo pros.

i need a HED3... *ggrrrmml*

beer cap bar ends

well that´s punk!
found on ebay.

desription:

"Draught" Beer Cap Bar End Plugs - By Mucky Nutz

Such a great product it almost needs no description, the picture says it all. But anyway...

These use an elastomer expander to grip inside the handlebars. The advantages being: -

* They will not come out by hand, tree or rock.
* They fit all handlebars with an inner diameter of 17mm upwards

Stick these 'draught' plugs into your handlebars. Tighten them up! Now drink! Have a beer! Then have another! Recycle the bottles! Then stick the tops on the Bar Tabs!! Jobs a good'un!
When too many trees have jumped out in front of you and scratched the tops to death simply change them for another pair.
For all those sceptics out there, the Bar Tab is wider than the bottle top (30mm) so simply apply a bit of common sense when fitting them and you won't shred your hands!
These use a black nylon end cap (to fit your bottle tops on), an elastomer expander, and stainless fasteners.

PMP Pista Bent Crankset

Non-straight crank arms have been introduced in the 80ies by several manufacturers. They were supposed to have advantages in pedaling and were ought to increase the pedal's propulsion power and to lessen energy dispersion on the downstroke. Today it´s a fact that as long as the distance from crank axle to pedal is fixed, there is no pedaling advantage in using bent crank arms. There are even more disadvantages to straight crank arms like more weight and more flex. But besides all technical advantages and disadvantages i think they look extraordinary and i would like to try them on a bike.
