making profits with the hype
i just found this guys on ebay. they sell pretty in my eyes average singlespeed conversions for an enormous amount of money.
for instance:
this motobecane has a price of 749(!)€:
a columbus sl frame with some random dura ace parts and tubular tires (for the city??)
and this belgian diamant for 849(!!!)€:
some (obviously used) campy parts and a reynolds 531 frame. nice chainguard though.
they look quite nice but come on guys! give me some time and i build you equal bikes for the half of the price! don´t forget these are only converted old steel frames!!! have you ever hurt your knees on left over braze-ons on such a conversion frame? its hell i can tell you. there is absolutely no justification for these prices and the profit margin has to be at least 100%. for around 800€ people wanting to buy a complete-bike can get new one such as a bianchi pista via condotti. or even building up a nice trackframe with brake drillings as a singlespeed is cheaper than that! the guys didnt even know that this isnt a german diamant before i told them via mail.
so. it´s nice to see old frames refurbished and off course old and good 10 speeds might be harder to find than 5 years ago but if you start a business like this, take a appropriate prices. and if you´re willing to buy a new bike: don´t believe the hype. don´t buy expensive conversions.

i think i´ll have to lay a lot of money aside...
there have been rumors in the net about this for a while now but it seems the REISSUE of the CINELLI LASER is about to materialize. usually we don´t post things already posted on other fixed blogs but this message is really an exception. there will be 300 being made by the original italian constructors.
Antonio Colombo (owner of Cinelli since 1978) stated:
"Today thanks to the rebirth of steel and people like yourselves, a dream is about to be realised: the Cinelli Laser will return. Not just as a museum display, but as a track machine; rigid and lively, more so even than its predecessor 20 years ago. All the original protagonists are ready and motivated; Andrea Pesenti who built 300 throughout the 1980’s, myself Antonio Colombo who thought them up, Paolo Erzegovesi who engineered them, and Emilvano Montorio who pulled out the tubes. New in the band will be Alessandra Cusatelli, my partner, and Cinelli design co-ordinator of the last 10 years. As always, it will only be available in limited editions. The kids are alright!"

from tire to tire vol. 2
Yet another tire has to be reviewed for our rubber abuse.
This time its the Halo - Twin Rail Courier.
You can get it in six different colours (we like colours a lot!!!), but as I know that coloured tires are sooner abused than black tires - I chose the black one. I picked my Halo up at the famous BLB (Brick Lane Bikes) in London for a nice bargain of 15£ (approx. 18€ euro).
I had it mounted on my wheel for around 4 weeks of ultimate rubber abuse aka skidding in January/February 2010. The size is 700x24 and its around 350 grams a little bit lighter then the Soma, by the way its a non-folding tire and I like more the 700x23 size. The tire features two lines of rubber which go around the full tire for extra comofort - this is were the name "Twin Rail" comes from. This "rubber rail" makes the tire a bit slippy in the beginning and you don't stop as fast as maybe on a Conti tire - but don't worry it wont last for long. The green carcass showed up pretty soon and I asked myself why is there a courier in the name of the tire - its not that durable I hoped for. When the anti-puncture strip was done too which took me another 5-7 days another black rubber layer showed up - this was my sign to change the tire.
...Halo do other great products like the rims/wheels...
So the normal price mhh, its too expensive for me - but the bargain I had on it was okay to check out. I am sure I will not drive a Halo again as long as its for skidding, maybe as a nice coloured frontwheel tire.

so that offers many implications... without wanting to interpret this drawing in detail - most of them are not cool.

Fausto Coppi Road Bike
ride your bike and listen to... vol. III
ok i messed up writing the soundtrack of the new week as i already had feared by starting this thread.
so for this week i recommend listening to this album when you´re out on your bike:
Hopeless - Dear World
Hopeless formed in 2008 in Melbourne. They released their debut full-length "Dear World" in April 2009. They are pretty quiet that whats called modern hardcore at this time and play music in the tradition of bands like Modern Life Is War, Verse or Have Heart. Nothing really new but i really like the album although there might be no real innovations to this genre called modern hardcore. Their sound is really drivin, energetic and passionate but not as put on as on other current bands. The album was mixed at Gateway Studios by Jay Maas (Defeater, Verse) in Boston and its driving bluesy hardcore rhythms are exactly what i prefer for riding. So check them out!
listen especially to: sleepwalkers

...we found this last night on Oranienstraße in Berlin
an aprx. 80s Peugeot conversion: no cages, no straps, no rearbrake, no tracknuts and a way big wheelbase
i´ve never seen a trackhub with quick release. so what is this!? a converted trackhub with quick releases? but i´ve never heard of quick release axles with a 120mm track width. maybe a suicidehub without counter threads and lockring!? fucking dangerous man...
uhhh yeah again again and again: photo by Linda
