night before velothon
On the night before Velothon in Berlin (29.05.2010) we discovered that:
Campagnolo and Colnago have been tent neighbours like it should be!
Big Mavic representation tent, even the Mavic-Bus( really a Mavic-Bus!!!) was registered in France...
My attempt to grab something for free from the desk in the background around midnight has been pushed back by an uber-motivated security guy. In fact there has never been something to grab. :(

ride your bike and listen to... vol. I
riding your bike is always better with listening to good music and in case of doing a long tour on a fixed-gear it can help pushing you over your limits when your legs run tired. we want to start a new series of posts related to music we are listening to when we are on our bikes. every week a new album - at least thats the plan. in the majority of cases i´m listening to several albums successively when i´m out riding cause most of them are´nt that long:)
so today i want to recommend these two albums:
Verse - Aggression
verse was a hardcore from providence in the usa that existed til 2009. they released three full-length albums and were one of the pioneers of modern oldschool hardcore beside bands like bane and later have heart. for me they are simply one of the greatest hc bands of the last decade. the texts of their songs are mainly related to political issues, especially on their last album "aggression" which i want to recommend. many political positions of them might be controversial and i want to point out that i´m not a big fan of their attitude in the middle east conflict but musically this is what hc should sound like and be about. hardcore may not be the most reasonable kind of music when you are out in traffic on a fixed-gear (as i am always riding more aggressively listening to it which we all know can be risky) but i heard that album a dozen times on my bike and love riding to it.

FMTM was a post-rock band from san francisco usa. they only just splitted up in april 2010. they are also politically-charged like verse but the music is completely different, as it´s a instrumental post-rock without a singer, they only use samples of political speeches. most of the songs exceed the length of five minutes. my favourite album is "the impossible leap in one hundred simple steps" on a sunny day on a bike it´s great to listen to.

i´m hitting upon the nabiis ftc alchemy frame over and over again so i really need to post it. awesome finish and such a sexy geo. the more often i see it the more i want it.

the beer bike
i don´t really know what to think of this "bierbike". it is for rent in erfurt. 16 people need to pedal and another one has to steer. all of them can drink bier from the integrated beer pump. so you better not use this vehicle on the main road. alcohol on the bike? i had bad experiences with that... don´t drink and ride. totally absurd.

i just found this illustration of a fixed gear hipster guy and couldnt stop laughing. i can´t deny there are aspects of this guy that may match myself or people i know. but that´s why i think it is funny.

from tire to tire vol. 1 soma - super everwear
When it comes to skidding down a tire there always pops up the question: try another tire? or same one again?
So until now I always tested the next tire - seems like it will take some time to skid my way through all these mass of tires on the market.
This is the first post in a row of tire reviews. I like to share and collect as many tire reviews made by myself as possible. There is no guide for the best skiding tire and this is not my intention. There are only random opinions or reviews on random blogs, threads, magazines and so on - keep in mind that this blog is free of sponsoring (free of sponsoring??? how real is that huh?)!!!
We like skidding a lot - this is how we do! I dont know if you believe in skidpatches or not - I do, because in mysterious ways it workes out.
I skid from time to time ambidextrous, but mostly with my chocolate foot on top (gearing 48x18 makes 3 skid patches).
I dont count how often I skid but I think its more than the average of the fixed-gear riders in my town.
The first tire to write about is the "soma super everwear" 23x622. The inflate goes from 7.0 until 10.5 bar which is higher than the most continentals. I bought it at Tokyo Fixed Gear in London for 40£(approx. 45€ EXPENSIVE!!!). I mounted it on in march/april 2010 for 8 weeks of tire abuse on my daily use bike.
Made in Japan (by Panaracer) - so this is often an argument like a hammer.
Its a non-folding tire with 350 gramm of weight - not that light but lighter than other non-folding tires out there! So you skid quite long and silent before you stop with a big black stripe on the ground. The sidewalls cracked in the end, they should last longer. When I saw the white carcass the tire got louder and there was not much time left before the tube exploded - so if you see the carcass or hear it louder than normal this should be your indicators and better care about the next tire. This thing got a lot of rubber on it, Soma advertise with 5mm of rubber but for this price even not enough for me. On wet ground skidding was not that good as I experienced on other tires before - way slippy and it took long until the grip came through. Mind the roll direction before you mount it! Fore this tire it was good to check out, but this is not my holy grail - there must be tires with better prices for same durability.

new pake aluminium track frameset
in addition to the first steel frameset (which in my opinion is quite similar to the soma rush) pake is bringing out this new aluminium frameset in july. i think it looks stunning. no prices yet.

Textima Time-Trial Machine
about a year ago i went to the diamant bicycles museum in kleinmühlingen. i took two photos of this amazing time-trial machine. it´s a textima and was ridden by the olympic champion olaf ludwig. i dont know exactly from when the bike is but due to its parts (mostly campagnolo super record) it has to be from the early to mid 80ies. note the awesome stem/fork combo! love it!

OH WOW! A NEW FIXED-GEAR BLOG! HOW GROUNDBRAKING IS THAT!?
so here it is. we have considered a long time if we should really start making a blog since there are so many others and so many good fixed related blogs out there. but we really think we could contribute some new things and thoughts and even if not, at least we have a new way to keep us away from the important matters of life like studying or spending time off the computer. to be honest: most of the time we arent at home we spend on our bikes, most of the time we are not talking about bikes we think about bikes and there are plenty of people in our surroundings who are fed of being bothered from us with random bikenerd topics. this might be a good way to keep them away from more of these.
so from now on expect various posts related to trackbikes, fixed-gears, vintage road bikes and velostuff in general or posts that dont even in the least are related to that - confusing ha?!... thank you for visiting our blog. m. & f.
